This morning, at half-past two o'clock, Mr Superintendent Aspinall received information at the fire brigade station that a fire had broken out at the works of Mr James Marsden, bleacher, Burnden, near this town, and he immediately proceeded to the scene with the brigade and the Nelson fire engine. He found on arrival that the drying house had been almost completely destroyed, and that the flames were rapidly spreading to some adjoining premises. He directed his attention at once to prevent a further destruction of property, and the efforts of the brigade prevented an extension of the fire. The drying room, which contained between five and six hundred pieces of cloth, was entirely destroyed and the contents consumed. The damage is estimated at £1,000, which is covered by insurance. The bleaching works are in work, and as all the hands employed in the drying department can be otherwise engaged, none are thrown out of employment.
