Dad told a story that he had decided the classroom looked a bit grim and the class would paint the class - I don't know where he got the paint from but he asked his pupils that when they went home for dinner if they would look in their backyard sheds to see if there were any old paint brushes that they could use.... on the return from lunch some of the lads returned with some very nice, still wrapped paint brushes.. he realised that they could not have afforded them, but that Bolton market was on and they possibably were "borrowed"... but that did not stop dad and his pupils give the class a lick of paint.

When I stayed for dinners (only a week as I didn't like the food) the canteen was in the prefab building on the opposite end of the church.
At that time it was the classroom of the "top class" with Mr Hodgson, the teacher.

My mum used to do me some toast and wrap it up in newspaper and when we got to school we all put our wrapped food on a shelf and Mrs Scrogg wrote our names on the wrappings.

The Prefabs

I came across your site by accident. I am the daughter of Keith hayes who worked at St Marks from about 1947 going into the 1950's. he used to tell me some of the stories of St Marks with affection. He has since passed on.
My mother is Joan Hayes, apparently she worked there for some time, first as a supply teacher and then becoming a permanent staff member in the early 50's. She remembers dad working in the prefab (Kathryn Lough message) and the stove with one of the lads having to stoke it each morning. She also remembers Cythia Popplewell and how dad was proud that she was the 1st pupil to go to the Grammar School since (?) 1936 and her friend Myra Kirfoot.
Thanks, I have enjoyed looking at a site and putting a place to my dad's stories.
P.S. Why was he called Gabby - apart from the obvious - he could talk....!!!

I sat at the back with Cynthia Popplewell: Myra Kirfoot: Josephine Cornwell I remember my class teacher Mr Hayes and we had one of the prefabs as our classroom which was freezing. The church was between the prefabs and the main school building. There was a coal merchants beside the main school if I remember right. Mr Snape used to take us for singing, he had an enormous adams apple, which was something I noticed about him. Mr Brickles was the head, he seemed very old to me, but I guess he wasn't really.
