Dear Mr Dixon
I am conducting some research into the old family estates of the Earls of Bradford.
From my investigations, I believe the Earl of Bradford of the time donated the land to the St Mark's Parish for the construction of St Mark's School.
I was going to contact the Manchester Diocese concerning information to further illuminate my studies on the Bolton Estate.
Having seen your website, I thought you may be able to provide me with a swifter reply.
1. Could you tell me whether the School is listed building?
2. Is the School still owned by the Church or is it now in private
ownership?
Yours sincerely,
Alexander Newport Apr 2008

My reply
Hello Alexander
Thank you for your enquiry
Mr Piggott purchased the land that the School and Church was built upon
The Earl of Bradford 'Orlando George Charles Bridgeman' gave £200 towards the £3,255 it would cost to build and fit the School, it was designed by a Bolton Architect Mr C Holt
The School was built in 1861 but was named Lever St Holy Trinity National School, in 1867 it was renamed St Marks.
St Marks Parish was formed in 1866 and the Church was consecrated in 1871.
The School is not a listed building, on my next visit to the School I shall enquire with the occupiers as to the current owner/s.
The full history of the Church and School can be found on the web site under the heading History at the top of any page and SM078 from the School Photos page.

Hi
I wonder if you can help.
I have been researching my Grandfather's family and have found a record of his Baptism on your website.
James Henry Sutton. Baptised 25 January 1882 Son of James and Hannah Sutton. Holden Street Bolton. Father's Occupation, Engineer. I know that his sister Frances was baptised on the same day.
My G. grandfather had tragically died about two months earlier and is buried in Tonge Cemetery. He was an engineer at Hick Hargreaves.
Will there be more information to be found in the Church records?. Would it be possible to see an enlargement of the 1901 congregation?
If anyone you know is also researching this family I have information
to share but I do not want my e mail made publicly available. We have a painting of James Henry senior.
I have greatly enjoyed looking at your website. Many thanks
Regards

Dear David,
I am related to Rev Edwin Wolfe who was connected to your school between 1900 and 1912. We believe he was our grandfather, father of Charles Cuthbert Wolfe (born 8 July 1902 at St Marks vicarage, High Street). We are trying to get information on our father's sister (or her family) Mary Joyce Wolfe who we believe married a Lockwood in March 1922 in Ashton.
I have two brothers Edwin Charles Monckton Wolfe (born 1941) and Peter Hilary Wolfe (born 1943), and myself Elizabeth Jean Litchfield (nee Wolfe, born 1955). A further brother Stephen John (born 1950, died 1969).
Thank you, Elizabeth

Hi David,
Brian Mills suggested that I contact you regarding the Roll of Honour for St. Mark's. I know the church was demolished a number of years ago but it seems the Roll of Honour is 'lost.'
I have contacted Bolton Archives & the Museum, but no luck there.
I am working on my Family Tree and 2 of my ancestors are/were on St. Mark's Roll of Honour. Do you know if it is 'Lost'?
Thanks.
Regards from Ottawa, Canada.

My Reply
Hi Joan
Thank you for your email.
Apparently the Roll of Honour for St Marks Church has been sought after by many people since the Church's demolition in 1973, someone passed a piece of the Church on to me last year.
The National Inventory of War Memorials has the item listed as LOST UKNIWM, But regarding your question here is what I know so far, before the Church was to be demolished the Reverend John Wood was given the task of finding good homes for some of the items contained in the Church, what I can gather from the information given to me over the years from different sources reveal the Roll of Honour was kept in the Church with many other items that was not deemed to be ideal to give to any individual person, and since no other upper body was willing to take on the ownership it was passed on to Fletcher St Barracks where it remained for a time.
As far as I can gather it was last seen in 1976 at the Barracks by many people in what I say an "unmounted position", but when the Barracks moved the Roll of Honour was mislaid (I won't use the word lost yet, "fingers crossed"). I know for sure it is not at the new Barracks, it could be anywhere, let's hope it will appear sometime in a dusty old room somewhere, hopefully in Bolton by someone who will understand what the finding of such an object would mean to so many people.

Sue Brown (nee Haydock) wrote
I'm not sure if you can help me but I am trying to trace back to my Great Grandfather and Great Uncles. I know that they originate from the north . My Great Grandmother was called Mary (Molly) Dryden and my Great Grandfather was called John (Jack) Robert Haydock. They married circa 1908 and had four sons Les, Norman, George and Joseph, Joseph was my grandfather.
I know this is an absolute long shot but if there is any family connection in anyway my father and I would be extremely grateful of any information that you could give us. I believe that George moved down south as did Joseph but that Les and Norman stayed in the north
Sue can be contacted on the Contacts page.
I have asked Sue to contact William Humphries since the Haydocks are cousins of William.

Valerie Likaris writes
Hello David,You may recall we communicated a short while ago about my web site. I am in the process of doing a web page about admissions to the Fletcher St Workhouse, and wondered if you had any knowledge as to where it was actually situated. The workhouse closed circa 1860 when Fishpool was built. I wondered perhaps if St . Mark's school was built on the site. Any information you could give me would be much appreciated.

Response Hi Valerie
I got the info you wanted, I got my old maps and documents out and found some information written in 1930s.
Fishpool was built to replace the old workhouse it's corner stones were laid on the 8th Sept 1856, and cost £2,880 and was completed in 1858.
It was built on land known as Fishpool Farm which was owned by the Church.
Previous to Fishpool, work started in 1810 on the Fletcher St workhouse and was completed in 1812 and was called Bolton Union Workhouse. opposite to the workhouse was the Great Bolton Reservoir No1 belonging to Bolton Free Water Works.
Valerie the site that the Bolton Union Workhouse once occupied is now Fletcher St Barracks.
Valerie can be contacted through her site that has a link on the Links Page

William Humphries writes
My name is William Humphries, although people use to call me little Billy because my Dad was Bill also, we lived on Plover Street in my very early years and went to St . Marks for a short time. I see you have a William Humphries listed on Plover St . that would be me as my dad lived on Reservoir St . when he went to St . Marks.
That however is not why I am contacting you, My cousin is Doreen Haydock who married a Bernard Smith, at St . Marks. I remember going to watch Bernard in shows put on at the church. Bernard and Doreen were very involved for a while making costumes and performing. Since I left England for the USA, I have lost contact with most of my family and I am trying to trace as many as possible as I am planning a trip home in the near future. If you have any information that could help I would be most thankful. Last I remember they where living in Harwood.
Yours Bill Humphries.

Response On the 31st July 2005 I sent an email to William with his cousins phone number

William Cunliffe writes
I have been following my genealogy and have traced my Great Grand Father (Wm. Cunliffe) to when he emigrated to Canada in July of 1883. I have also learned that he was a very active teacher at the "Wesleyan Sabbath (Sunday) School, Fletcher Street, Bolton". I have learned that the school was active between 1868 through to 1883 when he left. I have original printed "Appointment" documents from the school listing numerous officers of the time and various committee groups and members. I have been attempting to obtain further information and history of the school without much success and would be very grateful if you would have any guidance on possible sources.

Response I have given William all the contacts I had and he has had a positive response, can anyone else assist ?

Bill and Maggie Whelan write
I came across your site by chance as I am constructing a family tree, using Genes Reunited. On my mother's side, I have managed to get back as far as the marriage of my great grandfather and great grandmother. She apparently lived at 87 Reservoir Street, and they were married on 8th June 1876 at Saint Mark's Church, Bolton-le-Moors. Their names were William Smith, Spinner of Tyldesley and Amelia Tatlock a Piecer, We have the original marriage certificate which was signed by The Reverend Doman, who from your site we understand was the first Vicar of St . Marks.
If anyone could help with any details of any of our relatives which could be traced from this certificate or any other church records. Amelia Tatlock's father is named as Henry Tatlock, Spinner, and William Smith's father is named as Samuel Smith, Overlooker. We would be very interested to hear any information.
Bill can be contacted through the Contacts page

Response I have given Bill names of the people to contact, hopefully they can help, can anyone else assist ?
